Do you own a 6 cylinder powered BMW made from 2006 to present? If you’re nearing, or at, 75,000 miles we recommend replacing your water pump and thermostat out of preventative maintenance. Unfortunately, these new generation electronic water pumps fail around 75,000 miles to 100,000 miles. We’ve seen failure as premature as 35,000 miles. When the pump fails the vehicle will overheat and go into limp mode. Once in limp mode, the car will have reduced power and will only be able to travel at 10 mph or less, making it difficult to safely get to the shoulder on Southern California roads. To prevent this from occurring we recommend replacing the water pump and thermostat as service items rather than waiting for the inevitable failure. It’s not a matter of if it will fail. It’s just a matter of when.
